Match Report: Jersey Flegg Round 8 vs Sharks

The Wests Tigers Jersey Flegg Cup side has been defeated 46-20 by the Sharks in Round 8.

The home side trailed 22-4 at half-time at Lidcombe Oval and weren’t able to overcome a strong Cronulla side in the second period.

After the Sharks raced out to an early lead through Nikora Williams and Dylan Coutts, a well-worked short-side raid produced first points for Wests Tigers. Max Liles and Xavier Tauaifaiga combined to send prolific try-scorer Will Craig over in the right corner.

A second four-pointer to Coutts was quickly followed by a 34th-minute score to Prestyn Laine-Sietu to give the Sharks a 22-4 half-time lead.

Early in the second half, some deceptive dummy-half play from Jared Haywood allowed Josese Lanyon to crash over under the posts, with the Balmain SG Ball Cup captain impressing in his U/21’s appearances so far this season.

The Sharks then went on to post 24 unanswered points, with Laine-Sietu collecting a second and Lajuan Vito, Setefano Sele and Taj Ford also getting their names on the score sheet.

Wests Tigers did manage to grab two consolation tries, as Haywood’s long cutout ball put Craig over for a second, before the winger set Lachlan Broederlow up for the final points of the afternoon.

Sharks 46 (Coutts 2, Laine-Sietu 2, Williams, Vito, Sele, Ford tries; Pollard 7/8 goals) defeated Wests Tigers 20 (Craig 2, Lanyon, Broederlow tries; Craig 2/4 goals) at Lidcombe Oval.
