Report: Jersey Flegg Cup Round 1 vs Knights

Wests Tigers’ Jersey Flegg Cup side has been defeated 34-26 by the Knights in Round 1 at Lidcombe Oval.

The home side led 22-0 at half-time but Newcastle produced an outstanding second period to come away with the victory.

Wests Tigers opened the scoring after just three minutes when Josese Lanyon darted his way over from dummy half.

Lanyon went from scorer to provider not long after, as the powerful dummy half offloaded to skipper Tom Fisher who dived over for a try of his own.

With Wests Tigers leading 12-0 after 12 minutes, they maintained their ascendancy on the contest when Lachlan Broederlow went through the line from 35 m out to score the home side’s third of the afternoon.

Broederlow then set Te Umuariki Heremia-Tukere up in the corner, with Wests Tigers’ point-scoring beating the clock early on in the match.

The score remained 22-0 at half-time, with Wests Tigers holding a big early lead at Lidcombe.

The Knights started the second half with a bang, with five-eighth Cullen Gray and winger Mason Forbes scoring in quick succession to get Newcastle back into the match.

Sully Hoad grabbed the visitors’ third to make it 22-16 after 52 minutes and when Will Craig was sin-binned for a professional foul, things began to look ominous for Wests Tigers.

Hoad scored a second try to level proceedings for the Knights and Bailey Carmichael crashed over to give the Knights the lead for the first time in the match at 28-22.

Carmichael collected his second to put Newcastle well ahead at 34-22 before Broederlow’s second four-pointer gave Wests Tigers a lifeline.

A missed conversion all but erased their hopes of a comeback win and the full-time score at Lidcombe ultimately read 34-26 in favour of the Knights.

Knights 34 (Hoad 2, Carmichael 2, Gray, Forbes tries; Gray 5/6 goals) defeated Wests Tigers 26 (Broederlow 2, Lanyon, Fisher, Heremia-Tukere tries; Piccirilli 3/5 goals) at Lidcombe Oval.
