Match Report: NSW Cup Round 23 vs Knights

Western Suburbs Magpies have scored their fifth win of the season in Round 23 after coming away with a 22-14 victory over the Knights in Newcastle.

After trailing by four at the break, Wests fought their way back into the contest to secure the two points.

Hayden Sutton opened the scoring after 15 minutes for the Novocastrians, before David Armstrong caught the Magpies short on their right edge and extended the Newcastle lead.

Teenage centre Josh Feledy ensured the visitors remained in the contest, with a typically powerful carry allowing him to cross for Wests’ first of the afternoon.

The Knights led 8-4 at the break but the Magpies shot out of the blocks in the second period, with Lachlan Broederlow and Tino Tavana both scoring their first tries at NSW Cup level.

Jayden Sullivan set Declan Casey up after 60 minutes, with the halfback’s sweet pass sending the centre over untouched.

The Magpies led 20-8 with 11 minutes remaining, however Newcastle set up a grandstand finish when Riley Jones finished off a length-of-the-field Knights try.

Wests were awarded a penalty for an escort in the closing stages and Sullivan’s subsequent goal brought the scoreline out to 22-14, which was the full-time score in Newcastle.
