At the first rugby league fixture to be played at the Zurich Centre, Wests Tigers fought hard in attempting to overcome an 18-10 deficit at half-time, but ultimately fell short.
Claudia Nielsen was first to score, as she crossed in the right corner after some nice play from teenage hooker Chelsea Savill.
The try is Nielsen’s first since joining the club from the Australian Rugby 7s setup.
After a gritty period of tough defence from both sides, Canterbury-Bankstown capitalised on an error to score through dummy half Elisiva Felila.
With scores locked up at 6-6, Wests Tigers forward Cheyenne Baker continued her good form to open the 2024 campaign, as she produced a big fend to crash over out wide.
The Bulldogs went on to score two quick-fire tries before half-time to take an 18-10 lead into the second stanza.
When Rebecca Pollard scored a 51st minute try in the left corner, it remained Wests Tigers were right in the contest, however Sarai Pule scored her second of the afternoon shortly after to give the Dogs some breathing room.
A late try to Claudia Brown beside the posts was followed by Savill’s conversion to make it 24-20, however Wests Tigers were unable to grab another four-pointer and secure competition points.
