Match Report: NSW Cup Round 21 vs Warriors

Western Suburbs Magpies have scored an impressive 20-14 win over the third-placed New Zealand Warriors in Round 21 of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup at Go Media Stadium in Auckland.

Scores were level at 14-14 for much of the second period before a brilliant individual try by prop Tim Johannssen five minutes from full time sealed a memorable victory.

The home side jumped out to an early lead after five minutes when left centre Sio Kali collected a fumbled bomb to score in the corner.

The Warriors scored again 20 minutes later on the other side of the field.  Right side winger Motu Pasikala was on the end a three-on-two short side play to put his team up 8-nil

A neat Brent Naden cross-field kick found towering winger Navren Willett for the Magpies first try just after the half hour mark, with Jayden Sullivan unable to land the sideline conversion.

It was another try assist from Naden just minutes later which created the Magpies second try.  A clever inside ball on the left edge put Heath Mason through a hole, with centre Josh Feledy hunting up in support to claim his tenth try of the season.

Sullivan’s conversion from in front put Wests up 10-8 at the break.

The visitors extended their lead five minutes into the second half when Heath Mason spotted numbers on the short side and put Willett in for his second, to make it 14-8.

The Warriors hit back a couple of minutes later when Kali collect his double before an unsuccessful sideline conversion left the Magpies up 14-12.

Heath Mason was then sent to the sin bin for a professional foul leaving Wests down a man but the Warriors only managed to score a penalty goal during that ten-minute period.

The game was locked at 14-14 for much of the second period before Johannssen scored the magical match-winner.

The young prop burst onto a ball from 50 metres out palming off a few defenders on his way to scoring under the posts, with Sullivan landing a simple conversion from in front to seal the 20-14 victory.
