Leading 12-4 at half-time at Collegians Sporting Complex, St. George Illawarra maintained their lead for the remainder of the contest to come away with a much-needed victory in the hunt for a finals berth in 2024.
Fullback Ben Rumble was first to score for the Dragons, with the competition’s leading try-scorer crossing for his 18th four-pointer in just 12 games this season.
Teenage outside back Navren Willett grabbed the opening points for Wests Tigers, as the rangy winger continues to impress after graduating from the Wests Magpies SG Ball team.
Nick Tsougranis’ try and Ashton Ward’s conversion put the locals ahead by eight at the break, and Hamish Stewart’s effort extended their lead early in the second stanza.
Big back-rower Zak Clarke’s try was followed by another Dragons score, before Wests Tigers began their fightback.
Rampaging front-rower Herman Tofaeono went over for his eighth of the season and the tries came in quick succession, as hard-working forward Cayne Nicholas went over.
Nicholas’ try meant the Dragons held only a narrow two-point lead, however Jesse Williams scored with one minute remaining to secure the result for St. George Illawarra; the final score reading 28-22 at Collegians Sporting Complex, Wollongong.
