Match Report: NSW Women’s Premiership Round 2 vs Steelers

It was a tough afternoon in Wollongong for Wests Tigers’ NSW Women’s Premiership side, who were beaten 50-6 by the Illawarra Steelers on Sunday afternoon.

With much of the squad playing in the club’s NRLW trial in Brisbane on Saturday, the team named for this week’s fixture was vastly different to the one that lined up in Round 1 against the Sharks.

The Steelers stamped their authority on the contest early, with second-rower Olivia Vale crossing in the first minute.

Illawarra’s first-half dominance continued, as further four-pointers to Tori Shipton, Indie Bostock, Mia-Rose Walsh and Jordyn Preston made it a 26-0 Steelers lead at the break.

Wests Tigers collected their only try of the match shortly after half-time, as teenage forward Cheyenne Baker ran a good line to crash over.

Ellie Barnett, who debuted alongside fellow Lisa Fiaola Cup (U/17s) graduate Lucyannah Luamanu-Leiataua, converted, however it was all Illawarra from there.

Walsh and Shipton both went on to collect their doubles, as did Maria Paseka, with the final score reading 50-6 in favour of the home team.
