Match Report: NSW Cup Round 3 vs Jets

Wests Magpies have suffered a last-minute 25-24 loss to Newtown Jets at Lidcombe Oval in Round 3 of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup.

The Magpies trailed 12-6 at half time but were up by six points with 15 minutes remaining, only before the Jets scored a converted try and last minute field goal to snatch victory.

Much like the Jersey Flegg game which was played before the NSW Cup fixture, it was a much-improved performance by the Magpies following last weekend’s heavy loss in Canberra.

Wests Tigers NRL recruit Latu Fainu played his first game of the season and crossed after 19 minutes for the first of his team’s four tries.

The Jets then scored back-to-back tries to establish a 6-point buffer at the break.

Justin Matamua crossed for the Magpies second try three minutes into the second half before Brent Naden, who was playing his first match of the season, was sent to the sin bin.

Despite being down a man the home side crossed for consecutive tries through James Valevatu and Alex Lobb.

With five minutes to play the Jets levelled the score at 24-all through a try to fullback Liam Ison before half Niwhai Puru slotted a last-minute field goal to snatch victory.
