Match Report: NSW Cup Round 2 vs Raiders

Wests Magpies have suffered a 50-12 defeat to Canberra Raiders in Round 2 of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup at GIO Stadium.

The Raiders ran in five unanswered tries to lead 30-nil at half time, adding a further four in the second forty, to hand Wests a heavy loss in their opening match of the season.

Raiders right edge forward Mitch Spencer opened the scoring after 15 minutes, running a clean line from close range to make it 6-nil.

The Magpies were then made to pay when fullback Heath Mason was unable to catch a spiralling high ball, handing possession in good field position to the home side.

A poor defensive read in the ensuing set by the Magpies left edge allowed Raiders' centre James Schiller to find the line untouched.

The Magpies were down 18-nil when a pinpoint cross-field kick sailed over the head of Alex Lobb landing on the chest of Raiders centre, Mania Waitere.

Schiller bagged his second of the day on the half hour mark to make it 24-nil before Raiders fullback Chevy Stewart finished off a length-of-the-field play which started in their own in goal to make it 30-nil at the break.

Mason scored the Magpies first try in the opening minutes of the second half, collecting a bomb and cutting through the middle to race away and score a 70m try.

Struggling with 13 players the Magpies were soon down to 12 when centre Declan Casey was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul for holding down.

Raiders left winger Jed Stuart then stepped through some tired middle forwards to score his side’s first try of the second half before right centre Schiller bagged his hat-trick to make it 40-6.

Powerful forward Simi Sasagi scored from close range and soon later prop Trey Mooney did likewise before Casey bagged a consolation try late on to put a full stop on the 9-tries to-two drubbing.
