BTR Pre-season Podcast: Tony Sukkar

Wests Tigers official podcast Behind The Roar is shining a light on some of the club’s younger players over summer, as preparations continue ahead of the 2024 NRL season.

Episode 37 of BTR is available on Apple, Spotify and YouTube.

The pre-season series of BTR includes six players who are on NRL Development contracts and five who are part of the club’s top-30 roster.

Seven are yet to make their NRL debut, and all but two have played in Wests Tigers pathways teams.

This week we chat to Tony Sukkar, a local junior and edge forward who has climbed his way through Wests Tigers pathways teams, now patiently waiting for that next big opportunity.

Tony talks about his junior footy where he played for three clubs in the Balmain district, the influence his father has had on his young career, the greatest challenges of pre-season training so far, and why ‘finding his voice’ is a work in progress.

While super keen to make his NRL debut, Tony wants the timing to be right.

“Everyone dreams of making their NRL debut,” he said.

First I just want to set some goals, work on my game and get that right before diving in the deep end.

While some players pre-season goals are to get bigger, stronger, or faster, Tony admits he’d like to become a little more assertive.

“Finding my voice is a big factor that I need to work on,” said Sukkar.

Being able to communicate well with my half in attack, and also defensively, is a very big factor.

“So working on my voice and improving that is definitely an aspect away from the physical side, which is important for me.”

Wests Tigers BTR summer series will continue through until the start of the Telstra Premiership.
