Match Report: NRLW Round 9 vs Knights

Wests Tigers have suffered a 28-8 defeat to Newcastle Knights in their final game of the 2023 NRLW season at Leichhardt Oval.

Newcastle went on the attack from the word go, and it was brilliant vision from Jesse Southwell that cracked the firm Tigers defence as she found Sheridan Gallagher in the corner.

A Knights' error inside their own ten metre zone gave the hosts their first scoring opportunity, and birthday girl Rikeya Horne put the cherry on the cake with a four-pointer from the scrum base.

Jakiya Whitfeld produced a phenomenal line break to put her side in great field position as another right edge shift found Rebecca Pollard for an 8-6 half time lead.

The Novocastrian’s regained the lead minutes after the break when Abigail Roache showed incredible pace from the scrum base to race away, before extending the lead 11 minutes later.

Whitfeld's electric speed then brought the crowd to their feet as she chased down Roache from the opposite side of the field.

The visitors were quick to silence the crowd when Yasmin Clydsdale burst over from close range on the ensuing play.

Momentum couldn’t be regained by Brett Kimmorley’s side as the Knights continued the points scoring.

Olivia Higgins solidified Newcastle’s maiden NRLW minor premiership as she scooted from dummy-half to cross and complete the 28-8 result.

A crowd of 1733 turned out to watch the team's final game of the season after a late venue switch from Campbelltown to Leichhardt.

Wests Tigers will take many positives away from this year's campaign which saw 26 players wear the black, white and orange in the club's inaugural NRLW season.
