Friday Focus: Round 26 vs Roosters

Saturday’s double-header against the Roosters will provide Wests Tigers’ NRL and NRLW squads with their first opportunity to play at the new Allianz Stadium.

The state-of-the-art venue was reopened in September last year following several years of redevelopment.

Many Wests Tigers fans will hold fond memories of the old Sydney Football Stadium, which played host to a number of iconic moments in the club’s history.

Wests Tigers’ first victory at Moore Park came against the St George Illawarra Dragons in the second round of the 2001 season.

After trailing 16-10 at halftime, Kevin McGuinness and lock Tyran Smith both scored doubles as Terry Lamb’s side snatched a two-point victory.

Aussie Stadium also played a pivotal role in Wests Tigers’ charge towards their maiden premiership in the 2005 season.

After demolishing the Cowboys in Week 1 of the Finals, Tim Sheens’ men were faced with the tall task of defeating a Brisbane side boasting the likes of Darren Lockyer, Shane Webcke and Petero Civoniceva.

However, Wests Tigers held the Broncos to just one try and ran in six of their own, bookended by a length-of-the-field intercept from Benji Marshall and a four pointer for fullback Brett Hodgson.

Just six days later, Wests Tigers were forced to return to the Sydney Football Stadium to compete against the highly-fancied Dragons for a place in the Grand Final.

A masterful scrum play in the fourth minute allowed Benji Marshall to score the first try of the evening before Dene Halatau and Chris Heighington combined to give their side a strong first-half lead.

With the game on the line in the second forty, Halatau completed his double on the back of a slick passing movement that ultimately led the club to its first premiership at Telstra Stadium the following week.

While victories at Allianz Stadium may have been few and far between in the years leading up to the stadium’s demolition, Wests Tigers fittingly enjoyed their final triumph at the venue against the Dragons in 2012.

With both sides desperately attempting to keep their finals hopes alive, Tim Moltzen and Brett Morris traded tries as the 'Red V' took a slender halftime lead.

However, Wests Tigers would prove too strong for Steve Price’s team as Tim Moltzen claimed the first and only hat-trick of his 90-game NRL career.
