Match Report: NRLW Round 2 vs Sharks

Wests Tigers remain on top of the NRLW competition ladder following a strong 10-0 victory over Cronulla Sharks at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Taking a 10-nil lead into half-time, the hosts were able to maintain their advantage having now not conceded a point in 117 minutes of play.

Cronulla Sharks nearly opened the scoring early through Cassie Staples, but she was denied by her opposite number in Jakiya Whitfeld with a miraculous try saver.

Foul play put the visitors down to 12 players, and Wests Tigers took full advantage. Skipper Kezie Apps dived over for her first NRLW try for the club, bursting onto a short ball from Emily Curtain to open the scoring.

Whitfield extended the hosts’ lead minutes later. The winger scooped up a Cronulla knock on and dashed 90-metres downfield to score her third try in two games this season.

Wests Tigers went to the break leading 10-nil.

Co-captain Botille Vette-Welsh embarked on a break midway through the second half, but unfortunately didn’t see Losana Lutu looming on the inside in support which could have seen the 19-year-old score under the posts.

Emily Curtain pulled off one of the tackles of the day with fifteen minutes left in the match putting her body on the line to stop Annessa Biddle down the touch line.

Despite consecutive one-on-one strips from Cronulla interchange Sereana Naitokatoka, it wasn’t enough to inspire a late comeback.

In just her third game in the NRLW, Jakiya Whitfield was near unstoppable with ball in hand, amassing over 290 run metres.

Wests Tigers are two from two in their inaugural NRLW season and head south to face Canberra Raiders on Sunday afternoon at GIO Stadium in Round 3.
