Players go back to grass roots

Wests Tigers ‘Back to the Juniors’ initiative is receiving some great feedback, after phase two of the program launched last week.

‘Back to the Juniors’ is all about building strong, meaningful and sustainable connections with junior rugby league clubs in Wests Tigers catchment areas, namely Sydney’s Inner-West, Sydney’s South-West, and the broader Macarthur region.

Phase one of ‘Back to the Juniors’ saw a dozen players visit six junior clubs in the Macarthur region leading into the opening round of the NRL season.

Phase two kicked into gear last week, focussing mainly on junior clubs in Sydney’s Inner West.

Local juniors Luke Brooks, Adam Doueihi, Alex Seyfarth and Brandon Tumeth were among the players who went back to some of their junior clubs last week.

The clubs involved in phase two of 'Back to the Juniors' included Holy Cross Rhinos, Strathfield Raiders, Dundas Shamrocks, Leichhardt Wanderers and Five Dock RSL.

The 'Back to the Juniors' program also includes an opportunity for clubs to get heavily involved at Wests Tigers home games as part of the matchday entertainment.

Those in attendance at Accor Stadium on Easter Monday will have seen several junior clubs race off against each other as part of our popular Half Time Heroes event.

The clubs involved included Eagle Vale St Andrews, Minto Cobras, Oran Park Chargers, Camden Rams, Holy Cross Rhinos, and Concord Burwood Wolves.

Wests Tigers NRLW star Botille Vette-Welsh is overseeing the ‘Back to the Juniors’ program in her role as Community Engagement Coordinator. She says the feedback, from junior clubs and players, has been positive.

“It’s going really well and I’ve received so many positive comments,” said Vette-Welsh.

I think this program is a terrific way for Wests Tigers to connect with its catchment clubs in a fun and meaningful way.

"Our players enjoy going back to their roots, back to where it all started for them.”
