Match Preview: vs Canberra Raiders

Wests Tigers will be looking to build further momentum in the lead up to Round 1 when they face Canberra Raiders at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Despite falling to the Warriors in the first round of the Pre-season Challenge, there were several positive signs for Tim Sheens in his coaching return.

He has named a far more experienced line-up for this weekend’s match, with several of the club’s star players set to return to the field for the first time in 2023.

In the backline, David Nofoaluma will make his first appearance in the orange, black and white since departing to the Melbourne Storm on a loan deal last season.

He’ll be joined by Tommy Talau, who successfully made his return from an ACL injury last weekend, along with Daine Laurie and Brent Naden, who both impressed in the All-Stars clash.

Up front, David Klemmer and Isaiah Papali’i are set to make their first appearance for the club since transferring from Newcastle and Parramatta respectively.

Fan-favourite Alex Twal will line-up at lock in his first game since suffering a serious concussion that ended his 2022 campaign.

Luke Brooks, Joe Ofahengaue and newly-appointed club captain Api Koroisau have all been rested, with Tim Sheens electing to take a precautionary approach ahead of Round 1.

Canberra Raiders suffered a sixteen-point loss to the Bulldogs in Moruya last weekend and will provide stiff opposition for Tim Sheens’ side.

They have named a near full-strength side for Sunday’s match, with Jack Wighton lining up at five-eighth and Jordan Rapana replacing the injured Xavier Savage at fullback.

Wests Tigers have not played an official fixture at Belmore Sports Ground since the formation of the joint-venture, but will be hoping to make it a happy hunting ground ahead of their Round 3 clash against the Bulldogs.
