James Roberts announces retirement

Wests Tigers centre James Roberts has today announced his retirement after playing twelve seasons in the NRL.

Roberts made his first-grade debut with South Sydney in 2011 and went on to make 166 appearances for five different clubs, crossing for 77 tries.

The former NSW Origin centre joined Wests Tigers last season after a second stint with the Rabbitohs and has played 17 games for the club over two seasons.

Roberts underwent back surgery earlier in the year before making a return to the NRL in Round 16.

He made his first representative appearance for City Origin in 2015 and was recognised as the Dally M Centre of the Year later that season.

While playing for the Broncos, Roberts was selected to represent New South Wales and featured in all three matches of the Blues’ victorious 2018 State of Origin campaign.

Roberts has made three appearances for the Indigenous All Stars and participated in countless community programs designed to empower and inspire Aboriginal communities.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe says Roberts should be proud of what he’s achieved in the game.

James has done some amazing things in rugby league and was one of those players who could bring a crowd to its feet."

Justin Pascoe

"He’s had more than his fair share of injuries but he fought hard to get himself right after back surgery earlier this year.”

“All of us here at the Wests Tigers wish Jimmy and his family all the very best in the coming years. Thank you for your contribution to our club and to rugby league.”
