Balmain held off a fast-finishing Magpies outfit to claim a tense four-point win in the opening round.
The Tigers led 26-4 with less than 20 minutes remaining before three kick tries to Wests set up a thrilling finish.

Western Suburbs Magpies 24 def. Balmain Tigers 14
Two tries to Daniel Waqa, including the match winner, ensured the Magpies would leave Kirkham Oval with a win over Balmain on Saturday afternoon.
Wests raced out to an 18-0 lead after 23 minutes, before the Tigers hit back in the second half, however the home side were too strong in the end.

Northern Rivers Titans 22 def. Macarthur Wests Tigers 20
It was a heartbreaking loss for Macarthur Wests Tigers in the opening round of the competition.
The home side led 14-6 in the first half before the Titans finished stronger in the final 30 minutes.

Macarthur Wests Tigers had more joy in the Laurie Daley Cup as they pulled off a 12-point win over the Titans in the opening round.
Having trailed 18-14 after 40 minutes, Macarthur Wests Tigers scored 16 unanswered points to start the season on a high.

Wests Tigers 26 def. Penrith Panthers 14
Wests Tigers started the season on a high with a 12-point win over Penrith in the final game of the day at Kirkham Oval.
The Panthers held a 10-4 lead in the opening stages before Wests Tigers raced home in the final 30 minutes.
