Wests Tigers women produce statement win in season opener

Wests Tigers Harvey Norman NSW Women's Premiership have produced a statement victory over Cabramatta in their opening game of the season — running out comprehensive 54-4 winners.

With a number of club debutants included in Neil Stanley's side, Wests Tigers raced out of the blocks to lead 28-0 at the break and didn't look back, scoring ten tries to one in the 50-point win to put them top of the ladder after the opening round.

Playing in her first game for Wests Tigers, Maori All Stars representative Page McGregor crossed for the first try of each half while Taylor Osborne also bagged a first half-double that had the visitors well in front early on.

Captain Botille Vette-Welsh continued her good form in 2020 with a try herself in each half, contributing to several others as Wests Tigers piled on the points.

Amira Hamid bagged the home side's only try of the game after 60 minutes in just reward for her side's continued effort but it did little to change the result. Debutant Josephine Lenaz made it a day to remember with a second half double while Emily Curtain landed seven of her ten conversion attempts for an 18-point tally.

With Kiwi representative playmaker Raecene McGregor still to come back into the side, Wests Tigers will look to continue their good start to the season next Sunday when they take on the North Sydney Bears at TG Millner Field.

Wests Tigers 54 (McGregor 2, Vette-Welsh 2, Osborne 2, Lenaz 2, Fekeila, E.Curtain tries; E.Curtain 7/10 goals) def. Cabramatta 4 (Hamid tries; Karam 0/1 goals) at New Era Stadium
